THIS IS A BRAND MEDICATION

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS:

• RAPIVIR ® is indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster. Accelerate resolution of pain: reduces the duration and the proportion of patients with pain associated with zoster, including acute postherpetic neuralgia.

• RAPIVIR ® is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including initial and recurrent genital herpes.

• RAPIVIR ® is indicated for the treatment of cold sores (herpes).

• RAPIVIR ® can prevent the development of injury when taken at the first signs and symptoms of recurrent herpes simplex virus (HSV).

• RAPIVIR ® is indicated for the prevention (suppression) of recurrent herpes simple manifested in skin and mucous membranes, including genital herpes.

• RAPIVIR ® can reduce transmission of genital herpes when taken as suppressive therapy combined with safe sex practices.

• RAPIVIR ® is indicated for the prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease and after organ transplantation. CMV prophylaxis RAPIVIR ® reduces graft rejection (renal transplant patients), opportunistic infections and other infections by herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella (VZV).

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Patients with hypersensitivity to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any component of the formula
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Oral.

Due to the higher bioavailability of RAPIVIR ®, the dose every 8 hours are bioequivalent to the dosage every 4 hours (with omission of the evening dose) of acyclovir.

Treatment of herpes zoster: The adult dose is 1,000 mg RAPIVIR ® three times daily for 7 days.

Treatment of herpes simplex infections: The adult dose is 500 mg RAPIVIR ® twice a day.For recurrent episodes, treatment should be 3 to 5 days. For first-time episodes, which can be more severe, treatment can be extended from 5 to 10 days. The dose should be started as soon as possible, preferably in the prodromal phase or immediately after the first signs or symptoms.

Alternatively for herpes labialis (cold sores) RAPIVIR ® should be taken at 2 g twice a day.The second dose should be taken up to 12 hours (not before 6 hours) after the first dose.When using this treatment regime should not exceed one day, as we have seen no additional therapeutic benefit.

Treatment should begin as soon as possible, precisely in the prodromal episode (to be itchy, burning and tingling).

Prevention (deletion) herpes simplex recurrent infections: In immunocompetent adult patients is 500 mg dose of RAPIVIR ® once a day.

In some patients with very frequent recurrences (eg 10 or more per year) can get an additional benefit if they take a daily dose of 500 mg divided by 250 mg twice a day. For immunocompromised patients, the dose is DE500 mg twice a day.

Reduction of transmission of genital herpes: In immunocompetent heterosexual adults with less than nine recurrent episodes per year, RAPIVIR ® 500 mg once daily is the recommended dose to sexual partners. There are no data on the reduction in transmission in other patients.

Prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus (CMV):

Dosage in adults and adolescents (12 years): RAPIVIR ® dose is 2 g four times a day and should begin as soon as possible after transplantation. This should be reduced according to creatinine clearance.

Treatment duration is usually 90 days but may be necessary to extend high-risk patients.
